Commentary Proverbs 3:6
Proverbs 3:6

King Solomon who, when God said, "Ask what you want Me to give you", asked God to impart wisdom to him. God was pleased with this request because Solomon had not asked for himself riches, long life or that his enemies be destroyed, but rather ...discernment to understand justice... enabling him to govern Gods people in a just manner that would be pleasing to the Lord.(1 Kings 3:5-11) Solomon, who authored Pro 3:6, knew that true wisdom comes from God.

In modern day dictionaries wisdom is defined as: experience and knowledge together with application, prudence; common sense, insight. When Solomon had asked God for wisdom he said, "...I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in."(I Kings 3:7) As a child, how could he have experience to combine with knowledge? What Solomon did have was a man of God for a father, King David, from whom he learned. In 1 Kings 3:5-11 Solomon's father was defined as a man who ...walked before God in truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward God... and was blessed by God.

Here is how God defines mans wisdom: For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, God is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS." and again, "THE LORD KNOWS THE REASONINGS of the wise, THAT THEY ARE USELESS." ( I Cor 3:19-21)

In chapter 3 of Proverbs, Solomon is listing the benefits of wisdom. It is behooving to note the flow of instruction in verse's 5 though 7, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. The word "fear" used in this verse is Hebrew in the root form of; reverence. Have reverence for the Lord. The word "depart" means; put away. To put away our evil ways is God's wisdom.

When we asked Jesus to forgive us for our sins and asked Him into our hearts, we also chose to turn from evil and follow Christ. To repent of our sins. The Greek word "repent" means; to think differently, to go the other way. Let's do that, brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us leave behind the wisdom of the world and follow Solomon's example by seeking Gods wisdom. Lets be reverent towards the Lord and put away our sin and, In all our ways acknowledge Him and He will make our paths straight.

To God be the glory
