Commentary Romans 8:28
Romans 8:28

Has there been a time in your life when you've wondered why we experience bad or difficult things as children of God? Perhaps you find yourself in that place of struggle now. Men can utter dogmatic opinions as to the reasons why God allows these trials in our lives to occur, and to no avail we still ask, "why?" God, alone, knows the beginning from the end. We worship a God whose awesome power is boundless and whose knowledge is infinite. A God that is so Holy that even the tiniest sinful thought is odious filth in His presence. A God that is effortlessly in control of all things. The God of all things created. A God that speaks things into existence! Conversely, our pontificates are incapable of escaping the parameters of our finite knowledge, lacking the capacity to see beyond our current circumstances. We are hindered by our sinful nature, unable to perceive even if God were to answer all our questions.

If you were the father of a four year old boy who had to be rushed to a hospital emergency room with a broken arm; would not your love for your child cause you to be empathic to his plight? It is the same with God toward us. Furthermore, lets say the hospital is short staffed and the attending physician needs your help in resetting the broken bone. As you assist in restraining your child, the boy locks his eyes with yours. He knows that you, his daddy, loves him. The daddy that he trusts! What do you say? "Son, this is for your own good. 'Some day you'll thank me for this?" Even if you explained it to him he would not have the ability to understand. It is the same with God toward us.

Again, God knows the end from the beginning and His knowledge is infinite. Therefore, it is profitable to learn and embrace the Truth (knowledge) that God does impart to us. His truth is found within the written Word, the Bible. When we are anchored with His truth, trusting in His ability to see us through our turbulence, He will provide us the safe harborage we long for within the midst of our storm.

The Bible contains many verses that address the refining process (sanctification; to make holy) through trials that cause us to become more like Christ. May this promise from the God of all creation give you peace within your trials as you ask, "why?" ...God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. (Rom. 8:28) ...and whom He called... these He also glorified. (Rom. 8:30)

To God be the glory
